which is better compact flash or sd card for a camera?

Depends mainly on which one the camera uses. SD is mainly for newer point and shoots and for the consumer end DSLRs like the Nikon D90. High end DSLRs (e.g. D3, D700, 1Ds Mk III) generally use compactFlash.

I'd put my money on SD and SDHC cards. They're more compact, come in a larger variety of sizes and speeds, and are also (even though you don't care) generally cheaper.

And just as a little side-note, certain camera manufacturers use certain card types in their cameras. Compact Flash cards are often used in Canon models, just as Nikon employs SD cards in all of their cameras. Pentax cameras utilize either/or, as do Olympus cameras. Sony cameras are the sole users of Memorystick, or MS cards.

depends onwhat the camera takes...
if you haven't bought one yet, compact flash is better than sd, but since sd owo has sdhc, high capacity, which have the same sizes if your camera supports them. cameras which only support sd can usually only take a card to 2gb, where as compact flash now has 64gb and sdhc has 16gb cards... speeds are about the same if you pay attention to this and pay the extra cost...

Compact Flash WAS better, but now that there's SDHC it's got pretty much all the advantage. Few cameras use Compact Flash these days.
