i wanted the avionics rating but i'm not a citizen yet

i'm a student pilot too, but paused my training coz of the economy so i looked into the navy but i hope that i could become a pilot again someday

It depends on what interests you in the field of aviation;

To be quite honest, I admire anyone who can hack an aviation rating. That's not simple labor.

welcome to the world of long hours and busted knuckles, but its a great world. Now I can talk to you about the world AM's since i have been one for 11 years now...AM's have more understanding of how a aircraft work than any other rate in the rate since they deal allot with flight Controls, landing gears, (you will be a tire changing SOB on fixed wing) and the hydraulics...basily you will handle about 80% of the aircraft. Also AM's pick up rank a little bit faster than the AD's (machinists mates). Now if you like to see how things work and love to solve complex problems and really like turning wrenches and every complex systems...Mech(AD) is the way to go.

Now AM's and AD's are very hard working bunch and you will put in some long hours as well work in very uncomfortable places (on top of ladders, in fuel tanks, in landing gear holes on the flight deck, hangers and always on the flight line no matter the weather with oils, grease and exhaust all over you) But you will work with some of the greatest people in Naval Aviation and that's what i enjoy...and its fun to watch the mech's and framers go at it with the AT's and everyone arch enemy in aircraft maintenance...the AE's

And any job in Naval Aviation is better than any boat job...thats how i see it
