if you want to meet new ppl, i would suggest using an irc client (such as mirc) to chat on irc (internet relay chat). http://www.mirc.com
if you just want to chat w/ ppl you know, install yahoo messenger or skype and add them as contacts. you can then chat w/ them and even see them via webcam if they are online.
