Which haircolor is better on medium brown hair?

I am a natural blonde but currently have medium brown hair. I want to go back to blonde. I was going to a salon but was going to lighten my hair first so it will be easier to lighten. My question is, with medium brown hair, if I dye it a dark blonde, will my hair turn orange? Should I get a dark blonde hair color or a golden brown hair color?
Thanks, I think i will just save the money to go to the salon instead.
