Which GSM smartphone is for me?

I've got T-Mobile, so I need GSM (or I'd already have the HTC Mogul I think). I'm currently testing the Wing, but it is a little slow more me to LOVE it, though I can deal with it. I've thought about getting the Blackjack too and unlocking it.

Currently, I'm happy with T-Mobile and don't care/need 3G right now, so service aside -- if the phone isn't for T-M, I'll be unlocking it.

I don't care if it's got the slide-keyboard, but that's always cool.

1) GMS compatible (don't care about 3G, just EDGE)
1.5) WIFI -- not 100%, but I'd REALLY REALLY like it
2) Email / Calendar / Notes functionality
3) Some sort of word processor I can load
4) Pretty good speed
5) WM5 or 6 (not a necessity)
6) MP3 / Video playback

I like the design of the Wing, but it's slow. I like the Blackjack, but again, a little slow.

Any thoughts?

I just started testing a Nokia e61i for a review, and if you don't mind the blocky "styling" of it, it's pretty great. Much faster than the e62, has a great screen and keyboard, and personally I prefer s60 to windows mobile (though I know some folks need WM for certain functionality). It's unlocked, does EDGE and WiFi, and Web pages load relatively speedily for me over T-Mob. Good office and media apps on s60, too.

I've heard good things about the Dash - that it's much more responsive than Wing.

I also just tested Mogul and, like you, really liked it.

I was just doing random searching and was looking at the HTC Tytn (though it's a little high-priced) and the Glofiish X500+ -- which I've never heard of until a few hours ago, so perhaps it's an awful quality phone, but it looked pretty good from the mobiltechreview.com spot.

Any thoughts on those?

Not sure why you are thinking about the Blackjack over the Dash... The Dash has Wifi and everything else you are asking about... (but is not 3G). And as of WM6, it also includes Office Mobile. Plus there are plenty of notepad-like apps for WM5/6. And you can overclock the Dash if you think it is too slow (but I find it generally acceptable in speed). And it is much more svelte than the Wing (very similar to the Blackjack in form factor).

I'm a total n00b here, and all the different "names" for phones confuses me ...

The 8525 is the HTC Tytn, which is also the Hermes? Which can be unlocked to have GPS (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=291181)?

If that can be unlocked to have GPS, then it's a better choice than the Glofiish M700, which looks pretty hot to me (same with their yet unreleased X800). 3G isn't terribly important, and all phone have bugs of some kind.

I'm kind of down to the Glofiish M700, HTC Tytn (8525? Hermes?), or the HTC P3600 (Trinity) which doesn't have the keyboard, but looks very slick.

I've had a ETEN M700 and it was a pretty good phone. It does have its share of problems but you should enjoy it. Keep in mind that it really isn't a popular phone so finding accessories for it made be hard and expensive. If size is not a issue, I say go for the HTC X7501. I just picked up one of these and I cannot see myself using another device at least for a year!

I'm down to the HTC Tytn or Trinity. GPS isn't a must (you can always get a bluetooth device later); so I'm trying to decide between the slide-out keyboard or not ...

Go with TyTN, I find the keyboard to be a must, I was bored of my HTC P3300 because it lacked Keyboard, but had every other feature known to mankind.
