Which films really shock you?

I didn't know the Scum rape was coming, perhaps the difference. It completely took me by surprise - and I had taken a liking to Davis beforehand! The rest of the film was a classic, I agree.

I knew about Irreversible, and watched it out of morbid curiosity I guess :o. Having read a bit about it, it seems male viewers are more affected (on the whole) by that scene. A friend of mine said it made him think of what a man (in terms of physical strength over a woman) is capable of doing. It is an ordeal to watch, and I'm not sure what artistic merit it has. Having said that, that film has the creepiest opening credits I've ever seen. That white noise!
 
I found eden lake very shocking, disturbing, sickening

not sure I would watch it again but it was a very well made film that felt, at times all too remiscent of the headlines
