Which elements of the economy are affected by high unemployment?

Which elements of the economy are affected, either negatively or positively, by high unemployment? How? Unemployment is sometimes viewed as a self-correcting problem. Why might it be viewed in this way? In what ways can the unemployment rate decrease without outside intervention?
