Gallows humor is a type of humor that arises from stressful, traumatic, or life-threatening situations; often in circumstances such that death is perceived as impending and unavoidable. It is similar to black comedy but differs in that it is made by the person affected.
Host Steve Kroft questioned Obama's seemingly lighthearted demeanor when talking about those huge financial troubles. “You're sitting here. And you're— you are laughing," Kroft said. "You are laughing about some of these problems. Are people going to look at this and say, ‘I mean, he's sitting there just making jokes about money—’ How do you deal with— I mean: explain. . . Are you punch-drunk?"

Amid some more laughter with Kroft, Obama said it is necessary to have a measure of "gallows humor to get you through the day,

Hey folks, I voted for McCain and have little faith in Obama -but
let's not do to him what the left did to Bush.
Obama is, after all, our president and deserves our respect.
His Special Olympics joke was a shot at himself and was self deprecating. There was really nothing wrong with it unless you look for reasons to be offended -as many people do now-a-days.
His laughter during the interview when discussing the economy seemed, to me, to be nervousness.
People in law enforcement frequently seem insensitive when they are around victims of violence. It isn;t that they think it's humorous. The gallows humor is their way of protecting themselves against the horror.
Obama was doing the same thing. He's the president but he's just human.
Unfortunately, he's in way over his head.

Obama is not allowed to smile or laugh for the next 4 years.
We should watch him very carefully. If he smiles or laughs, we should immediately start articles of impeachment.

well i think Humor is very important. especially in hard times. so i am glad that our president is still able to be optimistic at times like these. why is he optimistic? because HE (not mccain) is president and he will be able to get us out of this crap. just like Chuck Norris laughs in the face of danger, Obama laughs in the face of a bad economy.

but to you're question. i would probably have to say the special olympics joke is more insensitive. although thats more on the terms of "if i had to choose".
