Which country (within the Anglosphere) makes the best music?

I am a proud Aussie and I think our music is the best ... Just in case some of you aren't aware about great Australian songs, I've made a compilation on my blog. Visit my blog on my signature.

Let me know what you think of it :)

I voted America because that's where ALL modern music spawned from. Rock n' roll was in full sway before the Big Four came along, from the Chicago Delta blues origins and the works of Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley. Motown singers in the sixties spawned generations of R&B hits. The hip-hop revolution in the eighties was largely the work of Rick Rubin's Def Jam productions (and certainly remains a heavy influence upon current rap artists). I could go on for hours.

You're right, it is really interlaced, which is why it is impossible to pick one country out of a very small list of countries only from the Anglosphere... classical music I think also has had a huge influence on contemporary music and most of it came out of European countries like Germany.

The question of 'who makes the best music' to me is both redundant and ignorant to how the music industry operates and how any kind of art is formed.

So the Americans who made music that was a partial influence on the Americans who created hip-hop were partially influenced by one German group. Wow, big European influence on the birth of hip-hop there.

What you don't like The Church, The Vines, INXS, Men at Work, The Hoodoo Gurus?? ok I not going to stake my musical reputation on these guys but I did also mention Three Dog Night, The Bee Gee's, The Easy Beats and Savage Garden.

Hatemonger, I wasn't trying to name every Australian band I was trying to name the best, my response was to Mick who said

He said " Might not be the best " and The Church and The Vines imo are banRAB that can be considered as the best, it's a rebutal to his self-deprecating attitude of Australian music.

So in what way did you show I was wrong?

true, but the feeling you got from the music is what i'm aiming for here, the same feeling as i listen to that music.
you can't say that every kind of music has this

The Brits and Americans will probably vote for their respective countries, so I think we will probably lose!

America provided the foundations and Britain built the house. My list is not a personal preference list. It is merely a list of artists that garnered success worldwide. Big 3's list has some great names and probably more influential or original (Waits etc) artists but for a small island our stamp on modern music is undeniable and indelible.

Gotta wave the flag for my homeland, Australia, although American and British music is of equally high value to me!

But who could deny some of these Aussies...

The Go Betweens
Midnight Oil
David Bridie / Not Drowning Waving
The Church / Steve Kilbey
Hunters and Collectors
The TriffiRAB
Nick Cave
Augie March

And if you don't know any of these names, I strongly urge you to seek them out!

It's a very broad list of genres. For someone to be bored of all the genres I listed is to be bored of the overwhleming majority of English language music of the past 50 years.

Hahaha yes i am
how do you know about JSBs?
we have our roots in it but we're trying to make something with a bit broader scope
Nick Cave is fanatastic

I voted US because I live here, but it was really close between here and UK. Both have a ridiculous amount of good music coming out now, and have had fantastic banRAB over the years. I chose based on the fact that The Pixies, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, Jimi Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, and Neutral Milk Hotel all came from the US, so that's quite a few of my favorites. Plus MF DOOM, but he is sort of in the middle (lives in US, but he was born in UK). In reality though, I think that since the internet allowed people from all of the world to spread their music throughout with complete anonymity if they chose to do so, the country of origin isn't is much a factor these days. Luckily I can listen to music from all over the world with the click of a button :)
