Mazda 3 is SO fun to drive and has a lot of aftermarket parts. The focus doesn't have much of a solid drive and has NO acceleration at all. You don't really see people adding a lot of mods to their Focus.
Mazda also looks a lot more sporty. My friend has one and he did a lot of work to the engine and exterior and it looks sick. He also paid for all the parts himself and didn't break bank.

The ZX Focus is a great car... handles well, good mileage, sporty engine. There are also more of them on the road than the Mazda3, and many more dealers and repair shops than Mazda has, so repairs should be easier. The ZX 3 and 5 also share many parts (both for repair, and aftermarket) with the rest of the Focus line.

I've never driven a Mazda3, so I really can't compare the two.
