Which breed of dog would be right for my lifestyle?

My husband and I just moved into our first home. He told me, as a house-warming gift, I can adopt any dog I want from a rescue. I really want a BIG dog (bigger the better). I've had small dogs my whole life (peakinease, chi, pitbull) and I'm ready for a change.

I want a dog that will protect our home while we're away. But he must be gentle, easily trained and smart.

We go camping a lot, and will take the dog with, so I'd love a dog that would enjoy swimming in the lake like our current dog (8yr old female pitbull).

My husband and I both work nights, so it can be hard to set aside a lot of time to walk the dog. We already make daily trips to the dog park for our current dog. We'll spend about an hour or 2 there throwing a ball around, than head home. And thats about it for the rest of the day. So a dog that doesn't have a high level of energy would be best.

Right now I thinking of either a Great Dane, Shar Pei or Chow Chow. I'm leaning more towards the Great Dane. I love their lean body and long legs.

Which breed of dog would be best? It can be any large breed of dog, not just the ones I mentioned. Thanks!
