Which TV channel would you view as being the most successful for animation?

Edit: to elaborate on the question, lets say you had your own show, which network would you want to be on? what genres are good for what channel?

Well...probably Cartoon Network, when they're not airing live-action...

But really, they air all types of animation - comedy, action, children, adult, domestic, anime & other foreign shows. And they've made several of their own shows. Some are better than others, but still...

Yeah. Definitely Cartoon Network.

Yes, that's true, but they don't put as much focus into animation as Cartoon Network.

I mean, if we're arguing who's the most successful animation broadcaster in current times, then FOX would win, since they a) air animation and b) are seen in more households.

But that's successful in terms of ratings, not in terms of animation, which is what the thread creator was asking. Actually, I'm not completely sure what the thread starter was asking. Animation can be successful in a variety of ways...

That's because they run the same stuff over and over again, while Cartoon Network at least gives a half darn of animation. And being #1 isn't what's it's all cracked up to be, mind you. You have to sacrifice a lot to stay #1, even if the networks have to rerun the same stuff over and over again, and also, making shows that are obvious rip offs. CN tried all they could, and they got almost nowhere, while Nick and Disney kept succeeding.

Back on topic.....Cartoon Network. 99.8% animation. Adult Swim. What more could you want?

But neither Nick nor Disney Channel are animation driven channels. The latter barely shows animation anymore, so how much more successful they are is irrelevant in this case. ESPN is higher rated and more successful than both channels, but they don't show any cartoons at all.

It has to be Cartoon Network; they show many different types of animation aimed at a diverse age and interest groups. I mean, come on, the word CARTOON is in it's name!

Eh? Over half of Disney's airtime consists of animation. And while they may not be 100% animation driven, their animated shows are leagues more popular and well known than Cartoon Network's, so it gets more exposure to the public.

Yeah, but half of that are pre-school shows and another quarter is aired in the dead of night. Only (at most) 50% of their animation that isn't aimed at preschoolers are aired at times most people are awake. And they only have one animated series currently in production, while Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network have at least 5 each...

If I was making an older audience cartoon, I'd pitch to FOX or Comedy Central.

Adult cartoon, Comedy Central.

Kids cartoon, Cartoonetwork. I would trust them more as a network, they have a 4 // 6-season limit for shows, so you know they won't overdo things like Nick has with Spongebob and Fairly Oddparents. I also respect them a lot more than I do the other networks. FOX has a habit of cancelling their shows that don't become hits on contact and Comedy Central has a habit of making shows and then having them disappear from the face of the Earth the next week.

However, Nick and Disney does get a lot of ratings, even if they overdo on airing the same thing over and over again and being obsessed with reaching towards their tween audience.

So in respect terms, Cartoonetwork would be my choice.

In ratings terms, Nick or FOX.

That's a lie and you know it. I really can't think of any Disney-made animated series that had major success this decade other than Kim Possible, even if Phineas and Ferb is gaining momentum fast, while Foster's, Billy & Mandy, Ed, Edd, 'n Eddy, Camp Lazlo, Ben 10, and, most recently, Chowder all have receieved solid ratings, decent lengths, and even some merchandise and recognition.

Sure, none of these beat Disney's live-action series ratings on a regular basis, but who do you think the public down the street would recognize more, Bloo or Dick Daring?

I understand what you?re saying, but I?m pretty sure Nickelodeon and Disney don?t exactly provide as much creative freedom as Cartoon Network does. Disney and Nickelodeon are built upon foundations that are kid and family friendly, so people who have worked on their animated programs have found themselves forced to tone things down. Sure, Cartoon Network has its S&P as well, but since its network is more generalized, they have plenty of room on their schedule to accommodate the types of animated programs that people wish to create. Now, I?m not trying to say that Cartoon Network is better, but I believe this needs to be considered.

Whoa, I ever actually thought about it that much. I would give any cartoon I have to Cartoon Network or FOX, depending on the content and target group I want. But there is no doubt in my mind that, even though they have a bit of live-action, that channel cares for it's cartoons. And since they have that season/episode limit (6 seasons/78 episodes), it's pretty likely your cartoon won't wear out and have enough time to get pretty horrible.

Yes, some of the things they can say in Billy & Mandy almost oustanded me.

And Foster's has a bunch of drug-addict references as well as them making the audience think a character is dead, died, or someone killed someone else (Halloween special).

The biggest thing Nick ever pulled off was ZIM stealing kids organs.

Tell that to the creators of all the animated programs that have been cancelled over the years. As fans, it’s easy for us to say that an animated program has gone past its prime and should be cancelled, but if the people who work on the show truly want for it to keep going, and if the ratings aren’t bad, they should be allowed to keep making new episodes. It’s asinine for a network to stop making new episodes merely because they’ve reached a certain number; if a show gets good ratings, it should go on until those who work on the show decide that it’s time to end it. I know people are going to try to counter my opinion by referring to “The Simpsons”, but for everybody who hates the new episodes, you can find somebody who likes them, and the ratings don’t lie.

I think that has to do with the writing. Spongebob, W.I.T.C.H. Kim Possible, Avatar and others have shown great series for Disney and Nickelodeon, as has Justice League for Cartoon Network. The thing they have is common are great directors/writers. I could cite mediocre shows on CN, just like someone could do the same for Disney/Nick. It all comes down to the writers themselves, not the networks, so you might as well go for the most popular ones so your product will reach more people.

Several of the people who worked on Avatar: The Last Airbender said at one time or another that they wished they could handle their fight scenes in a similar manner to Naruto, but were told that they couldn’t. Several of the people who worked on American Dragon: Jake Long, had to jump through similar loops and tone down the nature of their show in order to make it meet the standards of the network.

Good writing is important. It allows the people who work on Avatar or American Dragon to make entertaining shows despite the creative limitations. However, to deny that the limitations have an impact is counter-productive in this discussion.

I'd probably go to the Cartoon Network, although Nickelodeon would be my second choice (they have nice studios).

Now, if we're talking outside the US, then Channel 4 in the UK would be right up there as well. They'll show anything (that's decent, and maybe not so decent) but they have a bit of a soft spot for animation. I saw Futurama for the first time on there at six in the evening, during the week; and this was before it was cancelled!
