On the ride2work scheme I get £1000, which is paid back out of my taxable earnings, so I ultimately pay back around £600. Any excess of £1000 I have to pay in full, so I get the best value by spending not much over £1k, if you see what I mean. Having said that, it may be worth putting in a few extra hundred as all the full sussers around £1k seem to be quite entry level. With this in mind, I'm looking at
Spesh FSRXC Pro '10 £1400 (am I losing value on getting a '10 bike?)
Trek Fuel EX 6.5 09 £1050 (looks really cool, not much money)
EX 7 09 £1300 (sounds stupid but Im not keen on the colour)
Felt Compulsion 09 £1400 (probably my current leader, apparently quite heavy but a lot of fun).
I ride probably every other weekend, usually round the north downs, which is mainly woody with some mud and singletrak, plus the odd trip to trail centres. My current bike's a knackered Klein Adept race 02, I don't do any big drops or jumps but I'm looking to get into more agressive riding, more agressive XC than downhill really.
Any suggestions welcome - maybe the 6.5 will serve me fine?...
