Whey does my Honda civic MPG (Mile Per Gallon) goes down dramatically?

I have a 2008 Honda Civic automatic bought used a few months back. It has almost 70,000 miles on it. I have been having a very good gas mileage for a couple of months, and all of a sudden the gas mileage becomes ridiculously less. I used to get more than 30 mpg per tank but now I get less than 15 mpg per tank. I checked the normal stuff, such as tire air pressure, air filter, and engine oil. I don't see anything wrong with them. I live in San Antonio, TX and it gets a little chilly at night (30's or 40's) and 70's during the day.
I don't really know much about cars other than when to get an oil change, tire rotation, balance or alignment, stuff like that.
If you have any insights, please share.
Thanks,
Thanks for the answers. You guys are awesome.
I took my car to Firestone and got oil change, air filter, fuel injection, tire air pressure done in less than a week ago. I have an appointment with Benson Honda dealership tomorrow morning for transmission flush service. Should I ask the mechanic about the gas mileage irregularity? I am afraid to ask mechanics any questions because they might seize this opportunity to rip me off or overcharge.
Thanks,
