Where will history help you out in life?

The idea of learning from the past so that mistakes are not repeated is one of the basic foundations for studying the past.
But it should be remembered that each situation is different, no matter how close it resembles a past. For instance, the US fought against Iraq's army and easily expelled them from Kuwait and thought that they could easily defeat the government of Iraq in the Second Gulf War, forgetting that the Kuwaitis supported the US coalition coming in (and most thought that the Iraqis would welcome the US in indefinitely).
The trick is to pick the correct lessons of the past and apply them to the correct situation, thus mining the wisdom of past lessons learned.

For me, knowing the chain of events that allowed the stock market to crash and the Great Depression to happen, I was able to avoid the pitfalls most Americans are now forced to suffer.

It might help you to recognize evil when it decides to invade a foreign country, murder the elected leader, kill a million innocent people, so that it can steal the people's resources and give them to Exxon.

1. So you will know to vote for someone like FDR rather than a new Hitler.
2.So collectively ( including you) the right decisions about government get made.
3. Knowing the history of the country makes you one of the people. Without it you are not a complete citizen. You would be little better than an immigrant.
