Where does perception come from?

And I don't mean the individual sensory perceptions or anything stupid like that. I mean the abstract concept of perception. As in, instead of all your sensory inputs being taken in, analyzed, then being used to automatically create a reaction, without ever being truly <perceived>. We could make a computer program that simulates the activity of the brain, but would that mean that all of a sudden there is a living, perceiving thing inside of your computer? No, it would still be lifeless.

So what is it that takes all of your sensory inputs, all of your thoughts, all of your emotions, etc., and puts them together to create perception?

It seems to me that perception is proof of something beyond modern science. A soul, if you will. If there is a portion of the brain that is devoted to combining all the different senses and thoughts and stuff together, then it seems like that would be the location of the "soul". Otherwise, I guess the "soul" must just reside in the entire brain, or the entire body, that way it can pick up on the information from each part.

What do you guys think? And do you know if such a part of the brain exist or not?
