where? just anywhere it wants to!! yes, a liquid can take the shape of the container you put it in, and mercury is a liquid metal. If you just put it anywhere, it will just flow anywhere! 
but, compared to other liquids like water, mercury is not so "viscous", that is, it doesn't really like to flow, so it will flow, but not as readily as water or milk.
