Where do you think humans should colonize first: The Moon or Mars?

I was just thinking about this question today and I thought about a pro for Mars which is a con for The Moon.

First I would like to say that The Moon is closer and would be closer to Earth if anything should happen. Now it takes 1-3 days to get to the moon (not 100% on that fact, I do know its not very long) but I know for certain a round trip to Mars can last from 4-12 months. On the other hand scientist have only found traces of water molecules on pebbles on the moon and scientist know Mars has a polar ice cap.

If we try and colonize the moon but cant find any water what will we do? I think a good guess would be to take some of Earths water. The water on Earth is all we have. This could be a problem if we start taking water away lowering our supply. Keep in min that theres already people dying everyday of thirst.

Now you can see why it may be a good idea to colonize Mars and not The Moon. What I would like to know is what you think. Where should we colonize and why do you think this?

i think we should colonize the moon and build missile systems there so we can destroy any country. As they say he who controls the moon controls earth.

The Moon. It is nearer and it the distant future could serve as a convenient stepping stone for going further afield. Ships and structures could be assembled on the Moon and got into space much easier than they can here on Earth.

The water is a non-issue. We have plenty of the stuff to go round here on Earth. When people talk of water shortages it means it is not in the right place, or is not in a form fit to drink. These are issues that would not be affected if we took some to space colonies.

There is no useable water on the moon. BUT we should colonize the moon first. Just as a trial run. The data that can be collected from a colonization of the moon would be extremely valuable when on a mission to Mars. The sooner we start putting out green house gases on Mars, the sooner the atmosphere will develop into something breathable.

Day and night last two weeks each on the Moon. That's another problem with it, although perhaps you could tug away a moon-base in a crater near the lunar north or south pole. We actually do know of ice on the Moon's polar craters, I believe.

Mars has more gravity, has a day a little more than 24 hours long, and has some atmosphere.
