Liberals have no problem with activist judges making law instead of interpreting it as long as the laws they are making favors them, , just like they don't mind spending money as long as it the tax payers and not theirs..........

I am a conservative but more accurately stated a belief in the original intention of our constitution. We have, as a nation, strayed far from that ideal and we are paying for it with a renting of the social fabric of our nation. Roe v Wade began that wrong turn in 1974. Until we rectify that huge mistake we will grow further and further apart. I say that as one who doesn't particularly care all that much about the issue of abortion. What I care about is the legislating of law from the bench. The judicial branch was intended to be the "least dangerous" of our three branches of government. Today is is completely out of control and a clear and present danger to our way of life as Americans. It may very come down to our having a constitutional convention to finally straighten up this mess. It is that serious.
 
Traditionally, written controls on government have not fared well. Look at the Magna Carta. Those in power, or those who wish to be unrestrained by such documents either explain it away or remove the citizens avenue for redress.

As an example, I live in Kasnas, where there is a constitutional prohibition against public debt without a specific revenue stream fro repayment (balanced budget requirement). Last year we issued $245 million in bonRAB. The revenue stream for repayment is estimated at $68 million. Those in the legislature and the governers office explained that the constitution does not require a revenue stream sufficient to repay the entire debt. We (citizens of kansas) all know this is utter ********, but who is going to put up the hundreRAB of thousanRAB of dollars to fight it out in the courts?

As an example of removignt he avenue for redress, look at what it takes to get a case to our supreme court. At least 2 years, and an estimated 4.5 million dollars. Who can afford that? By contrast, in 1821, there was a big hubub because it could take 2 months to get a case to the supreme court, and a lawyer was required.
 
Then I guess it would be a matter of political ideology. "Rights" are harldy universaly agreed and defined concepts.



Free is also a very contested concept. Free from or to what? Who decides which (kind of) freedoms you should "maximize"?




Sure. You should have checks and ballances. And protections for minoritees are indeed important. But ultimatly the people should rule their own country. Not lawyers.

It's not a matter of speculation, it was, until America "made the world safe for democracy", a widely acknowledged fact, and why Europe for so long did not adopt democracy. There are innumberable books written on the very subject of democracy, and what we have in the west are generally attempts to carefully balance powers to avoid such a collapse.

Why do you think you have a separation of powers, a constitution, and soforth? Just for fun?



Yes, it's all very "class struggle", no truths, only ideologies, no bad policies, only different values, etc.

The point remains, I don't think a minority government is inherently better than a majority one, only that whether it is or isn't a majority government makes little difference to its legitimacy. Both have their good and bad points.
 
Ann Coulter would label me a a Left Wing Liberal Elitest, but the kiRAB I went to College with and my Children would say I am a Conservative person stuck in my "old ways". My social stances could be considered conservative to a point, but liberal enough to understand some social programs must exist, and must be repaired.

I do not want the government to be able to track me with my car, cell phone, or computer electronically, but that's just me. I sure do not want them keeping track of my fishing trips to Canada (passport issue). Is that conservative or liberal?

I do not want the government to search me, my house, my property, or my urine unless there is good and verifiable probable cause. Is that conservative or liberal?

When I feel a Liberal or Conservative Politician is wrong, or committed great injustice, I wish to be able to criticize without being labled a traitor. Is that Conservative or Liberal?

I wish to see an end to the Corrporate Welfare that is robbing money from our Nation's Tax Base. Coservative or Liberal?

I wish ALL OF OUR politicians would start paying attention to the deficit and what it will mean if it is not addressed soon. Conservative or Liberal?

I often wonder why American Schools are in finacial crisis' all over the country, and if something can be done besides the annual, and sometimes semi-annual referendum requests for more of our tax dollars? Conservative or Liberal?

Most Importantly, when our Leaders such as our President and his Cabinet commit to a policy and action that later turns out to be a major miscalculation with failed contigency planning-----I want them to be held responsible and accountable for their actions. Conservative or Liberal?

I really do not know what I am. I am a lesser of 2-evils kind of guy when it comes to voting, but I truly do not feel anyone represents me as it concerns the issues I have raised-----at least on a personal level. Feel free to define me, cuz I iz what I iz.

I believe that everyone has the equal right to live his life without unwanted coercive interference from other individuals. By extension, personal freedom (self-ownership) should be maximized, and property rights should be based solely on the right to control one's undertakings (no intellectual property, no ownership of unoccupied land, but individual personal property would exist.) Also, all collectivism should be voluntary.

In an ideal society, such principles would be written into the law of the land. Then conservatism would be unconstitutional!



A totalitarian is someone who defines all human life as the property of the State. Conservatism is tainted by this principle, as reflected in their advocacy of prohibition, laws against suicide, antisodomy laws, compulsory education, etc.

What has happened to the attitude that we can make things better? Vor's retarded response is the attitude that if you don't like it, leave. Instead of moving forward in making society and government better, we have attitudes that are inhernetly too lazy or incompetent to see that the current sitatution is not ideal. therefore, those people stuck in such mindless ideologies should be the ones to leave as they have no intension or motivation to make the country better as a whole.
 
No, this isn't right. The terms Conservative, Liberal, Libertarian, and Populist (aka Authoritarian) are used to describe four different views. The terms refer to one's opinion on whether the government should interfere with individual social/moral decisions and whether it should interfere with the economy and free market.

Conservatives: Govt interference in morality and social issues, but not fiscal issues and the economy
Liberals: No govt interference in morality and social issues, but govt interference in fiscal issues and the economy
Populists: Govt interference in both

They sure are handy. I never said pure-democracy (or direct democracy) was invulnrable. In fact, I never really meant to advocate direct democracy as I don`t really believe in it. I do however believe in the "rule of the people" (democracy), that is, that the people are the ones making the laws. The best ways to implement this idea is however quite contested. What I do know however, is that pure constitutionalism (something the above poster advocated) is not a form of democracy, but rather a form of technocracy or dictatorship/oligarchy (like Iran)



And I guess I disagree ;)
