The First Nations (note s) were here for thousands of years before this era. I'm not sure how far back you want to take things.
Study the Denai tribe (sp?) for one or the Potowatomi tribe. Both of these peoples were here for a long long time before being displaced by non-sharing Europeans.
The Denai people were a vast Nation and now there are only thousands left, most displaced. The Potowatomi people are the People of the Fire, one of three Nations in their area, most displaced to Arkansas. These are just two examples of changes that came to North America with the European invasion/discovery (pick either term).
