where can I learn about british history?

I know that americans are originally from british. so I'm curious just how far back is the americans' history goes (in this case, the british)...where can I learn a little bit about the british history?
 
There are plenty of history books about Britain. The Isles by Norman Davies is an excellent overview from prehistoric times to the present. David Starkey has written a good, four volume, set. There are many, many books about specific periods. My wife, for example, has two shelves full of books about the Tudors.
