Where can I get info about the war in Africa and US involvement?

I have a friend in the military who will volunteer to be deployed to Africa and I would like to do some research. Are there any articles or websites about what's going on in Africa? I want to get a sense of how dangerous it'll be for my friend. Any websites or articles specifically on US troops in Africa would be appreciated. Thanks.
