where can i get a decent car that runs or either a cheap motor for a mazda 626?

Ok so about 2 weeks ago my car's engine over heated and fried on me. i was having trouble with it before that but it still drove until oct 9th, when i was on the highway and it died. needless to say i now am in need of a vehicle that runs.
my credit isn't great and i don't have much to spend- less than 1000 and i'm trying to be on the road by Dec at least. so where can i go that they would work with me, car wise or where can i go to find a motor for my car that won't bankrupt me
 
i think a police auction would be your best bet. they impound some really decent cars then when nobody pays to get them out they auction them off cheap.
 
go to a used dealers car lot and ask them..i own one and there is a site that they can go on and find that dirrect car that you get
