where can i get a cheap bike?

i have been wanting to get a bike that doesnt ride high like a mountain bike. i dont want one with giant slim tires. and i want one that is good to ride around most places. doesnt have to be a long distance bike. aside from bike shops, because there arent any where i live, what retail store could i get a bike that that? academy sports?
