Where can I find what animation type goes with which show?

Flash, computer paint, CGI, motion capture yadayadayada. Which shows use what? Sometimes I can find it for individual shows. But I'm looking for an over all perspective. Any clue?

I realize that's not a thorough listing for specific shows, but even animation-focused databases just mention the type in passing. And movie/TV-focused sites have only a general animation genre category.

But if you watch enough cartoons and have a fair knowledge of animation history and production types, you can learn to identify the type by sight.

If there are specific shows you're curious about, post them and we'll be glad to help you ID the types.

Skyland is at the forefront of my questions..., Total Drama Island, (that I suspect is Flash like "Fosters"), Samurai Jack, (Which is probably also Flash). Stormhawks is one I should know after all my searching but I don't. I tend to dismiss Flash as quick and easy. But after learning a bit about computer "ink and paint", I'm finding "quick and easy" worth while.

I really need to find the second season/half of this show

Good eye on TDI: it's definitely flash.

Storm Hawks (which I've only seen a couple eps of) is 3D CGI with a color palette that makes the characters appear cel shaded.

When Samurai Jack debuted at Comic-Con, it seems like Genndy Tartakovsky said it was a mix of traditional and computer animation. It's been a while since I watched it, but if memory serves there were some elements rendered entirely in 3D with cel shading to match the 2D animation and backgrounds. And while some animation in the show resembles flash quality, the action and movement are generally quite fluid and doesn't have the stiffness that normally plagues flash animation.

Not familliar with Skyland, but a quick look on the ol' u-toob tells me it's 3D with a lot of mo-cap and cel shading in the character animation. Cool-looking show -- I'll have to see if it's available to rent.

I thought Toon Boom was an animation studio. Guess I'm behind the times on software developments. I just caught myself up via a few Google searches.

Isn't the Toon Boom software just an improvement on flash-style animation?

To me that's a problem. Fine points of the same computer animation, doesn't really single them out.

Skyland was on Nicktoons. It's not a widely available show. I've only seen it "underground" and it is definitely not on dvd yet. (or I'd have rented them by now)

According to wikipedia, Toon Boom did 6teen, which is stylistically similar to TDI. I was surprised to see some of the other shows and films they've worked on, although some may have just involved their digital ink/paint services. But now I'm noticing definite similarities in the animation styles even with shows from different studios.

Ah. That explains why I haven't seen it. I can't justify paying for the additional premium channels when I don't watch much TV to begin with these days.

Seasons 1 and 2 of Skyland are on the iTunes store, if you're willing to go that route. I think it's the only legit way to watch it other than Nick. I grabbed the first episode free and paid for the second for my review. I remember reading that it was mocap CGI somewhere in the "making of" materials.
