The standard bearskin of the British Foot Guards is 18 inches tall, weighs one and a half pounds and is made from the fur of the Canadian black bear.
The early version of the bearskin worn by the Grenadier Guards had a leather peak. The 1822 Dress Regulations describe it: 'Bearskin; sixteen inches deep, a gilt plate with king's arms in front, gold bullion tassels on the right side, gilt scales and grenades, black leather peak. Plume; white hair twelve inches long with a gilt grenade socket'. Picture at the link.
