It is pretty much impossible to write a virus for a Symbian device since the introduction of its Platform Security feature. But there could be malware applications and nobody can really protect a stupid user from itself.
I would recommend installing F-Secure's mobile antivirus solution, just to be safe. Or, it that is too expensive, make sure to install only software from Nokia's Ovi Store and you will be safe.
