Where are the updates? Frustrating...

My AT&T Samsung Captivate would completely agree. The only way it has made any progress is by the efforts of Designgears on XDA. The cooked versions of the released Canadian Froyo have made the phone mostly usable, GPS excluded (GPS on these seems to be a Samsung fail).

The N8, I like much better though..

Longtime Nokia fan (despite living in the States), and the current owner of an N8 who is increasingly frustrated waiting for software/firmware updates. What takes this company so long to even get out PR1.1, a fairly minor update (by most accounts)? I love the hardware of this phone, but the software is driving me crazy - screen lag, memory full warnings, no decent keyboard. What's taking so long Nokia?

There. Done ranting...

Just an average 5MP shooter, you'll be disappointed coming from the N8. HTC's camera hardware and software are mediocre in general, but I only use it for the quick shots when I don't have a dedicated camera on me and it works just fine for that. Now that android 2.3 supports some better audio codecs for video recording, I expect that area to improve in the future.

The Nexus S's camera is actually less capable than the Galaxy S, but I don't know if it's simply software or if the camera unit is different.

I have no faith in Nokia.. once again, PR1.1 didn't appear today.

Nokia software is always half baked and incomplete.

Ovi Suite for Mac has be 'coming' for 2 years! I'd wouldn't expect anything less than a pretty GUI wrapper around the existing iSync, Nokia Multimedia Transfer.. all of which don't work very well - the Nokia iSync plugin is a joke.

Nokia do this all the time - promise but never deliver.

PR2.0 - don't get your hopes it, its going to be very late and with a much reduced set of fixes and improvements than was promised.

The new browser is going to be a big let down.. so don't expect anything good. I wouldn't expect anything else but a QT wrapper around the existing browser. Slapping lipstick on a pig.

Nokia deserve to be crushed by the new comers - i.e., Apple and Google. They just don't have a clue.

My phone has no issues at all *not to rub it in* I've been waiting for PR1.1 not to solve anything for me but so that the hacker community can get more work done on Rompatcher.

Maybe I am crazy (and probably about to be flamed), but I am not as anxious for this update as much as I was the first couple of N97 updates. I am actually enjoying the phone as is. Don't get me wrong I would love an update (if and when it does happen) but I also feel like I can live without it. With Opera Mobile I haven't had much need for a browser update. The only other major feature I see in the coming updates is the portrait QWERTY. I see both of these updates as nice to have but nothing that I can't live without.

I'm looking forward to updates but I'm not disillusioned by the fact that I haven't received them when rumor after rumor promised I would. Nokia doesn't have to live up to the expectations set forth by rumors and people shouldn't expect it to. They are just rumors.

The phone has been in the market for 3 months and it has already received 3 minor updates. I'm as frustrated as you in terms of waiting for a fix to enable portrait Swype and I'd love a browser refresh to improve rendering performance somewhat but realistically, not all that much time has passed.

The reason it's so frustrating is not because of major deficiencies in the phone but because of all the rumor. We know the first medium-sized firmware update is coming soon, but it feels like it has been coming soon for a long time, and that is what makes waiting all the more difficult.

Why am I done ranting? Or what was I expecting? I was expecting a more refined and finished OS when I spent nearly $500 for a phone. And I was expecting more substantive updates than one that allows subtitles when watching videos. This is Nokia's flagship phone, for God's sake. They need to treat it like that and get the software in a better place to compete AND function and fast. I swear, time must be measured by weeks in Finland, not seconds like the rest of the world...

I agree, has Nokia said anything about these updates or is it just bloggers that know someone inside of Nokia maybe not employed where decisions are made but claim it nevertheless?

Good point. Of course, one could argue that the current OS on Samsung's phones is "good enough." At least one doesn't have to wait for the screen to rotate (tap, tap, tap) when the phone is turned to landscape mode. Or that there's a QWERTY keyboard in portrait. Or... Nevemind. Come on Nokia. Wake up.

Whoah, a lot of back tracking and "Update? What promised update?" happening.

That won't exactly sit well with customers.

Nokia DID promise an update *in early 2011* to prospective and current N8 owners, that would include a new browser and a portrait qwerty, which by the way was *already* delayed from late 2010. So, why the walking-back meme?

I'm beginning to think that the new CEO, Elop, *is* planning a major course change very soon.

Was supposedly coming around Christmas time, then supposedly coming today, and now we have supposedly coming on Monday.

I don't mind waiting, if they get it right, but by the time they get PR2.0 to us, we should have 1.1 by all of a few weeks, but of course PR2.0 will most likely be delayed, delayed, delayed and delayed.

Oh well, I just try not to get my hopes up on these so called release dates, that are coming from people on the internet.
