It depends on what you're looking for in a camp site really, I went to one a few weeks ago that was literally half an hour from my home, but in the middle of epping forest, not a lot there but we could have a proper camp fire etc, and had a fabby time, the best bit being not having a long drive there wearing you out before you have to put up the tent, and not a long drive home after we'd packed up. it also had a cafe on site and shops very near by. It's also handy if you're from out of the area and want somewhere to stay which gives you easy access to london as there is Central Line stations nearby taking you right to the heart of london.
