HD is HQ'd in Wilwaukee, this is where the engines (co-designed by HD & Porsche) are built. They have a factory in York, PA where the Softail, Touring and CVO (factory customs) are built, a factory in Kansas City, MO where the Dyna, Sportster and V-Rods are built, and a factory in Tomahawk, WI where all the fibeglass body components are built. HD uses vendors from all over the world for their parts, Italy's Brembo produces braking components, Showa forks from Japan, some of the wiring is done in Mexico, and some of the wheels are made in Australia and China. All-in-all, HD is ABOUT 60% ALL AMERICAN.
I know this sounds kinda bad, but stop and think about US auto manufacturers.....there are NO 100% American cars either. The US alone just can't produce EVERYTHING at a low enough cost to be affordable to the average person, just like in most businesses today, SOME things are just simply to expensive to do in-house and get outsourced to people that specialize in those particular areas....payroll is the biggest and best example....ever hear of ADP Payroll Services???.........
Even Buell, HD's American Sport Bike Division has Austrian based Rotax building their new engines....Erik Buell and a group of Buell engineers designed the new engine from the ground up and contracted Rotax to build it for them, this saved the time and cost of building a new factory. In order for Buell to do this on their own, it was estimated to cost almost $6 billion and 3-4 years to build a facility and tool it up for production.
