I know when I talk to people, and I want to mention an ex girlfriend, I'm always torn between saying my ex or an ex, since if I say my ex, it makes it sound like I've only had one, but if I say an ex, it makes it sound like I don't really care about my girlfriends, like "she's just one of many" or something.
