When you were in the military, what do you have to spend your income on?

I know there is tax free bases, housing is provided, base food is provided? lets say that you make $40,000 in one year, were you available to save a part of this money, or did it go towards eating out? cars?

I did eat out a lot in the military. I lived in the barracks, so all I really had to pay for was cable, phone, my car note, and insurance. I could have easily saved money, but I blew it.

It depends on if you're single or not. If you're single, then you can save most of your money. If not, then you have to support your family.

It all depends on what kind of person you are. You can be sloppy and careless and go out and buy a nice car, expensive clothes, etc, OR you can be very good with money and save most of it and you'll come out with a nice savings account.

Its true that you get BAS (Basic Allowance for Substance). It isnt much, $250 for an E-4 USAF. You can opt to eat at the chow hall, but it isnt free. Eating at the chow hall for free would be Airman that live in the dorms on base. Also, eating there gets VERY monotonous.

Your money tends to go toward phone bill, car payment, food, credit card payments, cable, etc. The same stuff you would usually spend it on in the civilian world.

Also, an E-9 (Highest Enlisted rank) with 20 years of service is only making $4945 a month before taxes. The "$40,000" you quoted atop is quite absurd.

Save it, pay off a car, buy electronic goods, clubs/night life, travel, vacation, clothing, music, alcohol... women

tattoos and alcohol... and strip clubs. seriously, but i'm not married or anything so that probably has something to do with it.
