When you cook do you use actual recipes or is the recipe all in your head?

My grandmother who lived to 101 years old had such a hard time trying to teach us how to cook what she did. We would ask, how much flour, sugar, eggs, salt,cheese etc....? She would never know the exact measurement and just say "Put in enough".
 
I follow recipes -- usually when trying something new I follow it exactly, but make notes for changes I would do next time (too salty, needs more flavor, etc.) Even something I've cooked 100's of times, I get the recipe out -- I don't trust myself not to leave an important step or ingredient out and ruin it.
