when you are writing a story in past tense...?

when you are writing a story in past tense and you are expressing something you feel at the moment.. should that be in past too.. maybe im not making myself clear but for example.. should it be.. -I rejected him and everyone acted like it was the end of the world, I guess I was the only who had the guts to do it- or should it be.. -I guessed I was the only one who had the guts to do it-

I have this same doubt when it comes to I think like if I put.. -I think I was the only one who had the guts to do it- or then again should it be I thought?
 
In that contex it would be I think i WAS (past tense) the only one who had the guts to do it.
