When you are sentenced in a Crown Court?

When attending a sentencing at Crown Court and a sentence of imprisonment is given, does the defendant have any time with his family or is he taken straight away to await a police van?

The last words of a trial judge are usually: "Take Him/Her down" which means to the cells to await transportation to the processing area of a prison.

In this era, we may quite possibly hear of family meetings, but this is quite unlikely given the nature of the event which has just taken place; it is highly probable that family members/friends may attempt to supply the guilty party with substances or equipment, with which they could harm themselves or others in the short term.

Since prison is a punishment geared, in the UK at least, to the rehabilitation of offenders, every attempt will be made to keep an offender secure at all stages in the initial process.

Generally you would be taken straight away, you have given up that right when you are sentenced, your sentence will run from the time you were first arrested for the offence if you have been in custody since, if not your sentence will begin from then

The defendant is taken to the cells and will be allowed a closed visit ( ie behind a glass screen ) with relatives prior to being transported to prison. He will then be allowed his first of fortnightly visits within a couple of days, which is known as a reception visit.
