When will the phone start ringing after I activate my Blackberry Tour?

My new Blackberry Tour arrived yesterday. I activated it according to the instructions and my phone number, which is to be transferred from my old phone, properly shows in the display. I've been setting it up, easily downloading my address book and some critical apps. But, the phone isn't ringing when a call comes in. The old phone rings and still works. I figured that after I stop the service on the old phone the new phone will start ringing. But, the company from which I bought the phone told me that after activation it will automatically start ringing within about 24 hours. Only then, he said, should I call to cancel the old service. Well, it's coming up on 24 hours now and still, although I can make calls out on the new phone, it won't ring to let me know a call is coming in. The old phone rings. So, I'm carrying around both phones thinking that the new phone will start ringing at any time. It hasn't yet. Was the service tech correct in saying that it will automatically start ringing, and the old phone stop ringing, at any time?
