My brother-in-law insists it was the 80s. I say it was the mid to late 70s because everyone knows that every huge fad actually begins the decade before and is only widely acknowledged five-ten years after the origin, at which point it becomes boring/overdone/pop and sells out.

Please note that I was not alive in the 80s and my brother-in-law was merely three years old and living in France, no less, so clearly neither of us were there.

So, what do you think?
Wikipedia had this to say:

Richie Stotts of the New York punk band The Plasmatics got a Mohawk haircut in January 1979, followed by Jean Beauvoir and Wendy O. Williams in 1980.

Oh yeah, I am so right!
But I'm pretty sure there were punks sporting the hawk before that...

1970's. My mum and her friends were teenagers then and were all punks, there are pictures of her friends with mohecans and if you look through books that talk about the punk culture and bands (i had to do this research for my art project) a lot of the pictures show mohecans.

By the way don't trust Wikipedia, everybody can edit it and half of the stuff on there isn't true.
