When to replace rear brake drums vs. shoes?

How do you know if you need to replace just the shoes? the drum and shoes? Is there a general rule of thumb?

my car has about 89,000 miles now. as far as i know the rear drum brakes or shoes have never been replaced since brand new.

It does squeak now and i can clearly hear it coming from the rear drums. To make sure I was parked and lifted my E Brake up and down and low and behold, the squeaking.

should i replace just the shoes? or do i need to do the drums too?
