I went mountain biking this weekend with my mountain bike and the chain was really dirty so I cleaned it off. However, I won't be going on another bike ride for a week, so do I lubricate my chain now, or wait until I go bike riding again?

you clean & lube the chain once aweek or unless it gets muddy or if ride in wet weather then every other day. do it now. do it after the rides.
if you only ride once a week then clean & lube every cpl weeks.

I usually clean my chain just before i ride. My boyfriend and I will clean our chains and apply small amount of lubricant (pedros ice wax). It goes on dry. Sometimes i dont do it at all if i just put lube the day before. This other guy i rode with would clean his chain right after and apply lube. I guess its a matter of preference. I was told not to overdo it either with lube.

Lubricate it now. Every time you clean the chain, you have to lube it. Some lubes have to dry for a few hours before you ride again so they don't pick up too much dirt. Read the instructions or look it up online.
Taking the chain off is optional but recommended if it gets too dirty. If the chain has a Quick Release/Master Link, you can do this without tools. If it doesn't, you need a chain tool. There should be videos on youtube that show you how to do it right.
For the actual cleaning part, I take some degreaser from walmart and mix it with water in a pickle jar. Then put the chain in and shake it. Just make sure you use degreaser...
