When there are no sidewalks, why are we told to walk or ride a bike going with the

traffic? It seems that we're always told to walk or ride a bike on the right side, going with the traffic. This makes no sense to me -- if a car's going to hit me it will be from behind. Wouldn't it be better to go against the traffic so if an idiot accidentally veers toward me, I can at least see him and jump out of the way? This seems to outweigh other reasons!
 
This must vary by location. Around here, you walk against traffic. You do however ride a bicycle with traffic. It's about visibility and speed. You can jump out of the way, but it's tough to ride out of the way. Bicycles are usually faster than pedestrians.
