I've never had to remind a professor to send one. But, if you are worried about it then ask them. My professors always did it within a few days and they gave me a copy of the letter.
...promised to write? how many days or weeks before the deadline should u send a kind email reminding them about the approaching deadline? I don't want to sound like an annoying person bugging about it way too early..........
