When should my gas light come on in my 1997 Toyota Tercel?

I have a '97 Toyota Tercel and I've driven it for about 3 years now (it's got about 87k)... I've driven it till I assume it's completely empty on gas (the meter read below E) but I never see the gas light come on. I know the light works because when I start the car and all the lights flash it flashes as well. I'm just wondering if I've NEVER driven it to the point of the gas light being on for the reserve, or if it just isn't registering with the tank itself. I'm paranoid about trying to test the gas light because I hate running out of gas on the side of the road.

Any ideas?
