Hg + I2 >> HgI2

Hg goes from oxidation number 0 to +2 and it is oxidized
I goes from oxidation number 0 to -1 and it is reduced

when mercury and iodine react to give mercury(II) iodide

Is this oxidation, reduction, redox or none of these?

I think it is redoz as the mercury loses electrons and iodine gains these electrons.

Am I wrong or right?

could your please explain this to me?
