When it's time for new rubber

How on Earth could you possibly let your tires get that bad? Tires are kind of important, so you might want to glance at them every now and then...

The tire was slightly (and I mean barely) cupped before going out yesterday and that happened through a short ride.

The tires ARE checked constantly, thanks.

So thise wear indicators weren't showing before yesterday? As I recall you posted about 5 weeks ago that you needed tires...
 
You're right, I estimated I had roughly 2000 km left to go and was well within that and kept riding I did to shorter trips.

Thanks for the implication, but I'm neither an idiot or someone who takes safety lightly.

There are enough of those on the roads already.
 
Guessing that you have adequate tire life left and continuing to ride the bike until the cords show through are not behavior I would expect from someone who does not take safety lightly, which is why I am riding you so hard on this. You are not some noob on his first bike, or some drooling idiot, so I expect more of you. I am counting on you to be the first to get to 100,000 miles on a C109r, so I can gage the reliability of the model without having to buy one myself.

So let this be a lesson to everyone: when you think you are about ready for new tires, you ARE ready for new tires. Trying to squeeze that last 1000 miles out of them usually does not work out well, as the last 10% of tread life goes a lot faster than the first 10% did.

Was something I was heavily considering until the last day or so.

If it was just me on the bike, it would be a different story and I probably would have done that, but since 98% of my riding is with the Mrs, it's not a risk I want to take.

There's alot of good information on the DS tires and how safe and proven they are, but as I said to her, if I make a decision that can only have consequences with me, that's one thing, but where it has consequences with someone else's safety, I have to err on the side of caution.
 
I am getting new tyres for mine because the current ones simply don't feel right. They are worn but I could probably get another 2000kms out of them. Even so I will spend the $800 dollars and get them both replaced.

I'm just glad our Prime Minister is giving us all $900 each to stimulate our economy - so I'm buying tyres made overseas!!:mrgreen::ooops:

The one thing about these tires is that there isn't alot of tread depth to begin with.
You got me thinking,so I just went out and measured my tread depth on mine.
tire milage (km) tread depth(mm)
front 6000 (9656) 3/32" (2.38 )
rear 5000 (8046) 4/32" (3.175)
rear(flat) 1000 (1609) 8/32" (6.35)

the wear bars a 1/32 of an inch thick.

I think I am going to get a set of tires to keep on hand.

edit. The rear new has 9/32" and the front has 5/32" of tread depth.
 
I had that happen to me on a car once. One week the tires were OK and the next week the cords were showing. It can happen to anyone so don't feel too bad. I'm glad you're safe. There have been too many members getting hurt lately.
 
It's weird, I mean I admittedly HAVE run car tires with treads showing (when I was young and bulletproof), but you've got three OTHER wheels to balance you if there should be a blowout.

I was running roads yesterday with alot of chip-sealed pavement so they are alot rougher and that likely had alot to do with the increased wear.

As soon as I saw the belts, the bike was parked and now I spent the day pouting because my new tires aren't here yet and it's been a BEAUTIFUL weekend for riding!!
 
Hi Don,

Has new owner of a C109rt (1000K), I would like to know how many Km does it take to a tire to get to that stage? I will mostly be driving it 2 up as well. This will give me some type of reference when to expect a replacement tire on the beast.

If you plan to buy a set of tires to keep on hand, store them laying flat under the bed or someplace like that, where it is dark and climat controlled. This will prevent the deterioration of the rubber than comes from exposure to light and cold/ hot weather.


Oh, as far as the stimulus check goes, the only way to make sure all the money stays in your country is to spend it on local beer and a hooker. ;)
 
That rear tire has a noticeable cup to it. I have also been on the fence about changing out my tire. I have a brand new set sitting in the garage and the center of the tread is just fading away. Looks like the consensus here is to change that tire.
