When I turn on my car and put it into drive, it won't go. It just revs the engine.?

I read somewhere online that it could be that the transmission oil is low. There is transmission oil? I thought there was just engine oil. My question is, what can I do about this? I don't have money to take it to a shop to see what is wrong with it, so I need to find out my self and get an estimate of the cost. My car is a 1996 Ford Taurus, with low miles. We have maintained very well, and it is otherwise a very good car. Could somebody help? Please?

ur car wud have to b ridiculously low on transmission fluid to not go... sounds like trans has gone bad or maybe shift linkage broke......as for ur vehicle it is NOT well maintained if u haven't been checking the trans fluid weekly... and changing it every 45k miles or so....thers a trans filter and fluid needs to b change on a regular interval jsut like engine oil needs to b changed.......
but need more details to see wat teh problem is... if it jstu stopped working and u dont ahve a puddle of red/brown fluid under ur car points for to linkage breaking....get sum more details and i can help u more good luck

Hi
Yes there is transmission fluid. It is red. The dipstick is behind the engine, not in front where the oil goes. You will need a long neck funnel and at least 1qt . When you put that in, start the car and look on the ground to see where it is leaking and how bad. Good luck!

Go to your owners manual and find out where your transmission fluid dipstick is. ( probably near the rear of the engine) Checc to see if it is low. If so, fill it to recommended specs.
