When I told my son about god he laughed at me?

My son is 12 and after deciding to tell him about god he laughed at me and look a t me like I was retarded.
Is this what children grow up like without god in their lives?
He says that it sounds like a ridiculous fairy tale and can't believe I actually believe in that.
He thought it was always like a made up.
