When I plug my iPod into my car stereo it sounds fuzzy. Why?

I plugged in a male to male auxiliary cable into the back of my Sony stereo in my car so I could hook up my iPod. After 3 months of plugging and unplugging the sound in my car starts to get fuzzy and screechy when I plug in mine or anyone else iPod. The same thing goes for iPod headphones. After a few months you have to start twisting the headphones to start hearing the music because otherwise the music becomes distorted or does not work in both headphones. Why does this happen to headphones or auxiliary jacks? Is there a way to prevent this from happening? Can it be fixed or should I buy a new jack? I searched all over Google for people with the same issue and could not find a one.
