When does the 6 month period start to take your drivers test in California?

I have asked a lot of my friends who drive and they all give me different answers. Anyways, I got my permit last month and I was wondering if to take your driving test for the actual license is it: 6 months from the day you get your permit, or, 6 months after your first behind-the-wheel class? Thanks
