well, if u put in those things u mentioned, u will have amonia breaking down bacteria, but remmeebr those bacteria need food too, so what i usually do is put in like a fish or two, and feed it SUPER lightly (you are more likely to kill the fish by amonia poisioning than starvation), also all i do is get an extablished tanks water filter and rinse it in AQUARIUM water, and run that filter in the new tank for a few days, and there u have it.
then after a few days say about 7 or so, u can feed more, add more fishes etc
i have never bout a test kit in my life, and all my fish are fine...regular filter cleans, na dwater changes.
if u cant get an established tanks filter, just soak your filter in cycle solution then add the filter to the tank and let it run, but id advise u to add a fish or two, so that the bacteria get food to populate the filter sponge
