When did the "Twilight" book/series start getting so popular?

I personally had never heard of the series until a friend of mine, who was re-reading Twilight, said they were making a movie from the first book. Has the series been as popular as it is now since it got published? Or did it only get all this publicity/popularity when it was announced that a movie was being made?

I dislike the series, but I always wonder when this almost blinding amount of fangirls/boys started

Around 2007ish when the fans got the news that the movie was coming out. Thats when it really started to get popular and well-known.

I started reading the series the end of my junior year which was May 07ish I would guess and the people at my school weren't that crazed about it yet. Eclipse came out August 07 and it had definitely become more popular. So I would say sometime in the summer of 07. It was definitely as popular as it is now as it was around the time Eclipse came out in my area.

The Movie. Most defiantly, I love books and had never heard of Twilight until they decided to make a movie. I actually don't think it was all that popular until they begun to make the movie with all of the HAWT PPL LYK U KNO?
